megan rosalarian gedris: Oh what fun it is to walk... →
rosalarian: A couple nights ago, while walking two long city blocks to my car after dark on a fairly well-traveled but still less savory street, some shenanigans happened. I was initially walking behind two men who stood shoulder to shoulder. They were walking slow and I had no room to pass them, so I walked…

Still a beginner, but here are some things I have...
1: Keep yourself zoomed out, especially at the early stages of a sketch! (I've found that if I zoom in too much, the proprortions will go all wonky, I'll get all obsessed with details, I'll get all obsessed with line work...and the line work doesn't even turn out that great for it, lol)
2: Additive (RBY) trumps Subtractive (RGB). (I was trying to base my colour schemes on the RGB colour wheel but it didn't come out looking quite right, so I gave up on that. I made a little colour wheel with approximations of RBY colours when planning colour schemes, and that seems to be working better. However, I'm still pretty bad at colouring so I'm not the expert at all! For sketches I just default to monochrome/within the same hue lol)
3: I don't think scribbling atmospheric crap helps pictures to look any better. Just mucks it up. I think it helps to step away from the picture for a bit and then come back when I'm unsatisfied with the unity/pro quality of the product.
4: On the same subject as 3, colouring the background in the same fashion as the character seems to help me! I was trying crazy textures and stuff...It was a little much.
5: Organic brushes are much more forgiving than round brushes. Round brushes are very exacting, and it's harder to make things look good! I'm really liking the "spread" brush right now (I think it's one of the default brushes. It's found in the dropdown menu below "density" in the brush settings.)
6: Those little buttons in the top corner of the tool box (below the brushes)? They are so important. Generally the square one in the corner is best for lineart. The nipple setting (1/4 the first one) results in a fuzzy brush when you press all the way down, while the ones in the middle have their own qualities.
7: The brush trumps the pen in all things! Choose the brush! It is the best!
Anyways: That's what I learned in the past couple of weeks.
